Playful Printmaking

Explore the playfulness and excitement of relief printmaking,
working with plates that are easily cut, inked and printed by
hand onto beautiful Oriental papers and cards. From that
basic beginning a wide variety of possibilities open up:
layer or combine colours, introduce collage pieces, add
freeform monoprint lines, mask and re-print areas, combine
any or all
of the above. Anything goes. From a simple start,
your vision will spring to life with grace and depth.

Encaustic is a wax-based painting technique that has been
used since ancient times. This course is designed for the painter
who is new to encaustic or needs a refresher. Technique and
safety will be stressed. All materials are supplied including a
selection of support boards.

Join Artbarn member artist, Maggie Dozwell, in an informal open
studio setting. Participants will explore this fascinating medium
on their own with instruction only if requested. Pigments and
mediums will be provided and participants need to bring their
own boards or supports. Some will be available to purchase
at the workshop. This is a hands-on studio workshop where
you will become familiar with the Egyptian technique of encaustic
using only beeswax and encaustic pigment. No toxic or harsh materials such as microcrystalline will be utilized in the studio.
This studio day will provide participants with a full six hours of working time in encaustic. Please bring ideas and creativity.
Basic understanding of encaustic technique is required.

watercolour? Then this is the workshop for you! Come explore
the medium with Bonnie Steinberg, a well-respected painter
and dynamic instructor. In this class, you will focus on transparent watercolour as means of artistic expression for painters with some experience. Since Bonnie is noted for her high-keyed colour
and dramatic lighting, these two elements will receive particular
attention. Subject matter will focus on local surroundings, with an
emphasis on period architecture, the details of their structure
and dramatic design. You will learn how to paint architectural
details, i.e. gingerbread, glass on windows, bricks, and other
delights of Toronto's well preserved past.

This workshop will introduce you to using inkjet photo transfers
on fabric for textile projects. In the workshop you will make
a pillow or wall hanging to explore the steps of printing on inkjet
ready fabric, applying the image to a background, and
embellishing the work using iron-on bonding materials and
hand-sewing techniques. No previous experience is necessary.

magnificent silk scarves in this one-day workshop just
in time for holiday gifting. With the complete beginner
in mind, this class will cover the fundamentals of resist
work, dye mixing, salt techniques, fixing and final treatments. Samples as well as two silk scarves will be completed.

Join member artist, Maggie Dozwell, in this one-day intensive
workshop for encaustic painting using the non-toxic Egyptian
technique. The session will accommodate beginners and advanced
participants. Beginners will be introduced to preparation of surface
for encaustic application, application of medium and top surface
techniques like scratching and leafing. Advanced students will learn
techniques such as image transfer and application of embellishments.

Each student will receive individualized attention.
